The award was presented to Mrs. Whitford at the Jaycee's Annual Awards Banquet last week In New Bern. Mrs. Whitford Is a math teacher at West Craven. Oral Dean Morris was Jaycee’s pick for Young Fireman and Rescue Squad Worker for 1984. The award was presented to him at the Jaycee’s Annual Awards Banquet last week In New Bern. Mr. Morris Is a member of National Guard and an employee of Weyerhaeuser Corporation. Gary Wetherington of Jasper, N.C. was named Young Farmer of the Year of 1984 by the Jaycees last week at their annual Jaycee Awards night In New Bern. Mr. Wetherington Is a life long resident of the Jasper community. He Is a graduate of Carolina Military Academy in Maxton, N.C. Mr. Wetherington had about 600 acres under cultivation. Educators Of The Month The New Bern-Craven County Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the New Bern-Craven County Board of Education spotlights “Educators of the Month” for January 1985. Mrs. Ann S. Moore, mathematics teacher at J.T. Barber Junior High School and Mrs. Jean J. Creech, first grade teacher at Bridgeton Elementary School. ^£^rs. Moore resides at 1902 '^fl^ington Street, New Bern, her husband and their son. She received her BS Degree in mathematics from Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh and has done further studies at North Carolina Central University and East Carolina University. She is an active member of Saint Cyprian’s Episcopal Church where she serves as a member of the Vestry. She is advisor to the Yearbook Staff, member of NCAE and serves as Building Representative and Treasurer Ann S. Moore of the New Bern Unit of the Association of Classroom Teachers. Mrs. Creech resides at 190 Croatan Road, New Bern, with her husband and their child. She received her BS Degree in Early Childhood Education from Pembroke State Univer- Jean J. Creech sity, Pembroke, N.C., and her Masters Degree from East Carolina University. She attends Temple Baptist Church. Ackiss Begins Service As Director Jean Flllingame Ackiss Mount Olive College Mount Olive——Mrs. Jean Fillingafne Ackiss, formerly of Vanceboro, has been appointed Director of Church Support at Mount Olive College. For 19 years, Mrs. Ackiss has served Mount Olive College as secretary and administrative assistant to President W. Burkette Raper. At a recent board meeting, the college trustees approved • the appointment of Mrs. AckfsS to' her new positron. * During the board meeting, James B. Hunt, Sr., chairman of the board of trustees, presented Mrs. Ackiss with an award for outstanding service to the college. She has been coordinator of the Mount Olive College gift support dinners that are held annually around eastern North Carolina. Under her leadership, the dinners have been the source of over $1 million in gift support to the college. Mrs. Ackiss describes her new role as “the opportunity to create a clearer understanding of the relationship between the Free Will Baptist Church and the college.” The North Carolina State Convention of Original Free Will Baptists sponsors Mount Olive Coildge. For the present, Mrs. Ackiss has three goals. “Number one. I’m joing to be doing a lot of traveling. I will be making calls on individual Fred Will Baptists and working with churches,” shs explains. “In the past I haven’t had the time to devote to a lot of visiting. Now, I will have the time. I want Free Will Baptists to know what we are doing, and have them say, 'I want to be a part of that!”’ Her second goal is to set up a meeting with members of the College Dinner steering committees. “I need to get some feedback on the gift support dinners, discuss plans and find out if anything needs to be changed. I also want to reactivate the Church/College Advancement Council.” Thirdly, Mrs. Ackiss plans to visit with pastors on a one-to-one basis and discuss the role of Mount Olive College. “I want to show how the college provides a service to the church,” says Mrs. Ackiss. Mrs. Ackiss has strong ties to her own church. Spring Hill Free Will Baptist* Church in Wayne County, where she is president of the local Women’s Auxiliary. She also sings in the choir and teaches the Adult Sunday School Class. “As a Free Will Baptist, I love my church and the college,” says Mrs. Ackiss. “My job, as I see it, is to build a bridge of understanding between them both.”
